In 2019 Marina Ignarski began planning a cabaret-based fashion show in aid of MIND and Independent Arts to be held at Ventnor Fringe festival in the summer of 2020. However, the festival was cancelled for 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite this setback, Marina was eager to continue the project and use the lockdown as a way to create a piece of performance art to look at how lockdown affects people’s mental health. The show ‘Don’t give up, try again’ was created as a hybrid of a virtual fashion show and fashion film. Marina is very passionate about mental health issues and wants to make people more aware of them.
Approximately ‘one in six people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year’ (MIND).
Marina’s performance involves using herself as canvas for the clothes, creating six looks representing multifaceted nature of mental health that are worn at different locations around the Isle of Wight.
Each location was filmed and photographed at a safe distance and tells the story of the emotions felt during lockdown.
The proceeds will be going to charity MIND and Independent Arts.
